7 Of The Cheapest Countries To Visit For Budget Travel

Zipolite Beach, Oaxaca-Mexico

A lot of people don’t travel because they think it costs too much. I’m here to tell you that traveling doesn’t have to be expensive. There are many places in the world that you can visit for less than you would spend by staying at home. (Think of all the money you spend on restaurant meals and coffee!) And, budget travel doesn’t have to mean staying in hostels or sleeping on someone’s couch. In some of these countries, it’s even possible to stay in luxury for a good price. Here are my recommendations for the cheapest countries to visit for budget travel.

1. Vietnam

Especially if you are a foodie, Vietnam is the perfect budget travel destination for you. I spent very little, ate some of the best food of my life, and spent my days absorbing a culture that was very different from my own. Besides the incredible street food in Vietnam, you will also find pastries to rival those in France, and some of the kindest people you will ever meet. The only problem? You just may not want to leave.

2. Cambodia

What I loved about Cambodia was the mix of cultural sites, such as the temples, and some of the prettiest beaches I’ve ever seen. I absolutely adored Koh Rong Samloem, and while you can stay even cheaper than I did, I managed to get a beachfront bungalow for around $60 a night. Cambodia is one of the cheapest countries to visit for the best value (restaurant meals under $5, beers for 25 cents), and I recommend going before the word gets out.

For the best hotel rates in Asia, make sure to check out Agoda.com. You get credit for each stay, that leads to free stays once you have enough points. I’ve had many free nights in hotels in Asia, thanks to Agoda!

3. Greece

Now is definitely the time to go to Greece. I can’t believe how cheap the prices are. I have gone twice, and, my favorite spots were Mykonos, Santorini, and Chania in Crete. I am going for a third time in May, and I was able to book boutique hotel rooms for 35-45 euro a night! Greece definitely needs the tourism support, and, now, it’s one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe. Greece also offers some of the best food in the entire world.

4. Mexico

While the touristy areas of Mexico aren’t the budget travel values they once were, there are still many hidden areas of Mexico worth exploring. My favorite budget travel destination is Zipolite beach on the Oaxaca coast. It’s funky, offers a range of places to stay right on the beach at budget prices, and is one of the prettiest beaches in Mexico.

5. Portugal

I was very impressed with how good Portugal, especially the Algarve, was for budget travel. Lagos had some of the most incredible beaches I’ve ever seen, wonderful hiking, and remarkable sunsets. It’s definitely a place I can’t wait to go back to and explore more.

6. Bolivia

I haven’t been to Bolivia yet, but after seeing photos of its natural beauty, and reading that it’s one of the cheapest countries to visit, it’s definitely on my bucket list. Apparently, you can meet all of your travel expenses for just 2o dollars a day.

7. Indonesia

Kai Island, Maluku

Indonesia is not only one of the cheapest countries to visit, you can also get between the different islands pretty easily. Many people automatically think of Bali when they think of Indonesia, but I urge you to visit some of the less well-known places in Indonesia for even better budget travel. My favorites are the Gili Islands off of the coast of Lombok, Kai Island in Maluku which has clear waters and incredible snorkeling, and Raja Ampat which has the best diving and snorkeling in the world. I swam with huge manta rays in Raja Ampat, and it will be an experience that I remember forever.
